The Way the Sky Looks (Matthew Shreve)
NYU Paulson Center, 2025
Legazpi, Philippines: an empty house in the country. The dark before sunrise. A woman on a lawn chair, dressed in black, carries a bouquet of roses. From the brush, a deer approaches. A 45-minute chamber opera exploring loss, perspective, and countless lives lived beneath a single sky.
In this "biting," satirical horror opera, an Upper East Side mother has only a few hours left to cook the roast and set the table before Mr. Rochester, Papa’s boss, arrives for dinner. Good thing she has her darling twins, Bonnie and Beau, to help her decide on the special ingredient! What'll it be?
